Performance

If FreeOrion consumes a lot of CPU time when playing a game, you may want to turn off some of the eye-candy in the UI.

From the main menu, select Options, and choose the UI tab. At the bottom there is a Galaxy Map section. Turning off Galaxy map gas rendering and Galaxy map starfield rendering may significantly improve performance and reduce CPU use. Trying both options for Optimized system rendering may also help, particularly when zoomed out to view the whole galaxy.

An approximate (inaccurate) frame rate indicator may be turned on on the Options Video tab, at the bottom. Show FPS will toggle on and off an indicator at the top left of the screen when playing a game (but not on the intro splash screen). The Limit FPS option is inaccurate, but setting a low FPS limit can reduce CPU use as well.

Playing smaller galaxies and using fewer AI opponents may also help performance.
