I believe that FreeOrion should have a presence on the Fediverse and offered to create an account for it, but it didn't go any further.

Discord would be way better IMO. Is there a specific reason as to why FreeOrion doesn't have a Discord server yet?
If this post contains code, it's released under GPL 2.0 or later.

Discord is not open software either. Also we have a very tiny community so even IRC channel became unmaintained.

Oh, I didn't know you guys didn't use any free, non-opensource commercial apps.

They use Jitsi Meet for the online meetings of the developers.
The closer to a FO channel was/is maybe the XMPP/Jabber channel. o01eg knows?

Tragically, some people do.
They shouldn't complain when a Black Kraken will come to eat them, though.

FreeOrion is free open source software, but there is no requirement that any contributor must use only free and open source software when contributing, as long as the contributions are suitably licenced as applicable. Rather, non-open tools are routinely used, including the Visual C++ compiler in particular. Notably, opinions on this situation may vary.

That there is no standing chat / discussion service in use other than the forums and github is not specifically because of the freeness or openness of the available service providers.
