Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement
New question: should there be a limit to how much refinement you can research in something?
Computer programming is fun.
Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement
That's currently an open question AFAIK. It might solve the problem of do-nothing "future techs" to make all future techs incremental refinements to existing techs, ad infinitum. These improvements brought by future tech refinements would of course have to diminishing returns.

Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement
Goodmorning all,
As I am envisioning the system there is no particular NEED to for any given tech to have a limited number of refinements. as long as the techs intertwined in their dependencies so that you can't progress too far on any given branch of refinements without advancing all the others.
That being said if there are 8 differnt weapons type, the last might have ~ 3 refinements, which would mean the first would have ~ 8+3 = 11 refinement levels (it could have slightly more or less of course, but RP investment would be equivalent to 11). That would yield ~56 weapons refinement levels (11+10+... unless i miss mathed something). 56 refinements seams like a perfectly reasonable number. If you manage to finish all 56 refinements +8 weapons techs, you probably would have been better off going for tech victory instead. . . so functionally it's probably the same as having an infinite number of them.
Best wishes all,
Robbie Price

Diminish to what?tzlaine wrote:That's currently an open question AFAIK. I'm thinking Future tech "N" (the final one before the bonus quits going down) should be aroun 50 -30 % of the first future tech level.

Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement
Goodmorning all,
Future tech's are theory techs, or refinement techs??
For me each application will have refinements
lazers mrk 1, mrk2 . .. . mrk n. where n is predefined or infinite.
Future techs can't really be application techs, because that's just silly.
And Future techs as Theory techs does not make very much sense . . . unless the contribute nothing but winning game points, thus inflating further the score gap between winners and losers.
How are other people seeing 'Future Techs' being incorporated into the Theory-Application-Refinement model??
I don't see where they fit?
Best wishes all,
Robbie Price

Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement
Well for 'fututre tech' to really work I think
1. you need at least Some applications to have Infinite possible refinements
2.you could have Future Theory Techs that are prerequisites to research certain levels of those refinements
ie you need HyperPhysics N to get Laser refinement N+25
That would give you both Refinements and Theories for 'future tech'

Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement
I like Krikki's idea. It'd be relatively simple to group applications into vague categories based on what they do.
Such as: Mining, beam weapons, torpedos, etc....
then make the future tech refinements augment a category.

Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement
Well I wouldn't give bonuses to Categories of applications, some individual applications would have infinite refinements (all refinements would be application specific
those refinements would require certain levels of future tech
those refinements would require certain levels of future tech

Ah, either way would work I guess.
