Galactic News
Personally I always loved the news programs in MOO 2 so could it be possible to create some sort of news program to Free Orion as well?
This program could be about something like the economy, military and technology standings between species, report what kinds of special events have happend to other species and inform you about some galactical threats. Also the destruction of species could be told in this program.
The main purpose of Galactic news atleast in my opinion would be to tell you something about the intimate events of other space empires that you wouldn`t otherwise get a change to hear from.
Of course this news program isn`t a top priority, but it would be still nice to have some sort of chanel where you could hear what`s going on in other parts of the galaxy.

Yes, but it would be nice to know how other species are doing and get some reports on what kinds of special events has happened to them.Geoff the Medio wrote:There's always the SitRep. Isn't your imagination better than any art-intensive in-game news broadcast anyway?
Just imagine a world were you would only get to know how your own nation is doing. No foreign disasters or crises or discoveries. That would be just like living in a bottle.

Is there any particular reason info such as this couldn't be shown in the SitRep? Likely you'd be able to apply various filters to the reports, but one of them would include events relating to other empires that you are aware of.MikkoM wrote:Yes, but it would be nice to know how other species are doing and get some reports on what kinds of special events has happened to them.
No. It`s just that usually the Sitreps haven`t included info about other species or atleast the info has been very limited. But of course you could include the info in Sitreps as well.Geoff the Medio wrote:

Indeed. I wonder if Mikko would be happy to make the cinematics? hehe... Those take a lot of work... and yeah. any of the things shown in cinematics could have been easily done in sitrep.utilae wrote:The difference between a sitreps and a news report is that the news report is more than a list of events. It is a capture of the event in great detail. It is a cinematic.
Computer programming is fun.

All hail the returning hero! (well atleast I'm returning), I've been in school a full year now and think I could start doing some real damage (um I mean help) with programing. I've learned some Python as well (was doing some Civ4 Moding) and that may come in handy too.
I do like that S!SNG news paper bit, I think comeing from the angle of a Humorous news report that might include a few information tidbits would be a good angle. Imperialism and Sim City 2000 had a little newspaper of just that type, 90% of the time you got joke articles but any major event would triger a article devoted to it. Hopefully we could do something along these lines, it would be a nice way to incorporate fan fictions and other off the wall things.

I agree - it adds flavour and personality to the game, which is very important IMO. If people find it annoying then there could always be an option to relegate news items to the sitrep instead of having them pop up automatically.

About the Sitreps. Could it be possible to have some sort of inner links in Sitreps? This would help people to find the kind of information that they are looking for much quicker than scrolling down the hole Sitrep. It would also give the player a clear picture of what kinds of news there are in the Sitrep the moment he gets the rep, if the links are placed on top of the text. Of course there should also be back links which would bring the player back to the main links.
I think this kind of system would be good especially in the later stages of the game when Sitreps tend to grow larger and larger. It would also give the reps a kind of more technical and advanced look than the traditional Sitreps in MOO 2 and 3. But of course there should still be an option to scroll the whole Sitrep through.
Maybe this option has been already considered, as you seem to be a very creative and intellegent team, but I haven`t yet had the time to read all the important threads through so if this is already an old suggestion I apologize.

How and what sorts of data management tools that will be built into the SitRep will probably depend on how many and what sorts of SitRep message we end up genrating. Right now there's nothing, since you only ever get a few SitRep messages on a given turn if your ships happen to finish building simultaneously. Various importance level or message type filters have been suggeted to deal with additional message when they start being generated.
I'm not really sure what the proposed links are supposed to look like... It's not just hotlinks in a SitRep message to the relevant game objects (planet, system, fleet, ship, building)... It sounds more like the first SitRep you get would just be a few links to other filtered SitReps that only show a certain kind of report. That seems like an odd way of doing it though, when you could have one-click filters that stay in pace at the top of the window that turn on/off showing a particular kind of event... or likely would need a separate SitRep Options window or SitRep Filter Settings window to do anything more complicated.
