Does the game run on iPads?

#1 Post by defaultuser »

I know there aren't any tablet-specific builds, but does the Mac build run on iPad? I'm getting a mini with ios 7, so if it runs I'd at least take a look. I've never had a tablet before so I'm not that familiar with general portability.

Do not know about compiling for it, but likely a few UI quirks such as some noted in FreeOrion on Tablet/touchscreen UI.

I tried on a laptop touchscreen(linux) and could not figure out how to click without another input device.
I never use the touchscreen, so there is probably some odd gesture like rubbing my elbows together I did not figure out.

Normally press and hold but that's not universal.

Re iPads, very unlikely, the Mac version won't work that's for sure, they're currently completely different but there are plans to unify them at some point. You might be able to get it to compile from source in some way in the same way it apparently can work on Android tablets, but Apple're notorious at locking down installs so you can only run apps got from the store and it's definitely not there.

Good luck, but I doubt you'll get far.

What Mat said. AFAIK a lot of the libraries and dependencies might not work on iOS (Boost, SDL2, Python, libogg, libvorbis, etc.). Even if, you'd need to build specifically for iOS, and we currently don't provide builds for iOS. For that to make sense we'd also have to pay for an Apple developer account to get FO into the app store (as that's the only way to install apps on iPhones/iPads).

So, most likely never going to happen.

It was a relatively idle question. I'm not likely to spend any time trying to build for it. I really don't know much of anything about OS X or iOS (obviously). If the app would run, I'd give it a try to maybe keep in the stable for time-killing (FreeOrion EXCELS at that) when somewhere.
