Hi!
I'm playing against AI only.
On the long run, especially in smaller universe, the computer has no chance to win,
because it is always reacting with setting planets to status "defense"
(don't know the english expressions used in game, using a different language)
when you or other computer opponent is near.
This strategy is useless and leads to loosing the game.
If you add an option to the settings for deleting the planet defense status the gameplay of this great game could become much more challeging.

It would be better to adjust the AI to not make such liberal use of the Defence focus, if it has to sacrifice the production capacity of too many colonies.

I think the problem exists at least since like 0.4.7 (when AI actually learned to use defense focus) or so. I would love to have this varying with AI personality (and a broader personality spread).
There hasnt been a balance pass for AI in 0.4.10 (maybe even not in 0.4.9?). With the changes to bonus it is possible that this problem got actually better because the bonus you can get from a different focus is less than it was.
Any code or patches in anything posted here is released under the CC and GPL licences in use for the FO project.

With Defense focus you loose not onyl focus bonus but all boni related to planet focus (so e.g. for Production just only the "KI automat..." bonus of around 2 pt remains) so its very expensive.
Defense focus for me is one crucial point for AI becoming such weak.
And there are only very very few scenarios where it is of advantage (e.g. when same system is colonized by different players).
So best option for me still would be a new option item where you can turn it off or set a 0-100 % factor by which AI's decision of using Defense focus for a planet is recalculated.
By the way, even if overloading here.... for me two other main issues for weak AI are
=> producing masses of troop ships which are never used or used very much later only
=> AI is slow with colonizing new planets; many planets even in own systems are not colonized over many many rounds (even with Exobots already researched)
Thanks and sorry for these new topics here, but if one or other could be considered to improve AI, would be a big thing for me, as I could spent just more of my lifetime to this great game...
