I'm busy!

Here, various developers can tell you all about what they're up to, so you can yell at them for being idiots. "... and there was a great rejoicing."

I thought I leave a note what's currently going on with me (you probably noticed my even more reduced presence lately). Unfortunately, the big project at my company didn't go quite as planned (well, no surprise here, since when do big project ever go as planned...), we only now reached the critical phase, so to speak.

Which means, I'm even more hopelessly swamped than ever before, and to top that off, I'm getting sick every couple of weeks since last autumn, right now I'm out of commission again . Which of course does not help with the big project, and I've finally reached the point where I can't keep up even the little involvement with FO I managed to maintain these last months.

So there will no test builds this week, and maybe also not next week. I have to cut corners, sorry. I'll try to return to my duties ASAP, but I need to get reasonably well before at least.

Things at work most likely won't calm down before May I fear, but once things do calm down and me hopefully getting a bit more stable health wise, we should start to get the next release (0.4.9) out. So, to speed tings up a bit, try to get all your projects wrapped up and start to focus on hunting down and fixing issues (judging by past experience, that usually takes a lot of time anyway).

Get healthy and good luck getting out of the work-swamp.

I guess tagging a weekly revision is also out of the question(?). Or could somebody else do that?
Even if we got no weekly tags I still want to provide "official" weekly snap builds in the meantime. Should o01leg and I organise ourselves so at least we are partly in sync. Else please suggest a mode of operation.
Any code or patches in anything posted here is released under the CC and GPL licences in use for the FO project.

Look, ma... four combat bouts!

I guess I can handle tagging a commit as the weekly "test revision". I just did it for this week, so you can make your snap builds now.

Agreed.

Yep, I could build PPA for marked commit. Could something be done for Windows and Mac?

I think I should be able to do the Windows and Mac builds like usual for now. Not much beyond that for the time being, but at least that much.

Should things become more difficult again however, someone would have to take over for me for a while. Builds for Windows shouldn't be too much of a problem, there are enough devs on Windows after all. Mac is another issue of course. Worst case we can't provide builds for OSX while I'm gone. Not ideal, but not the end of the world. The Mac player base isn't exactly huge anyway...

Thanks! At least I'm not sick anymore (for the time being, lets see how long that lasts... ;)), but the workload is still really bad. If anything, that has become worse than better, and I'm afraid this trend will continue for a while before things start to get better. It's kind of a grit-your-teeth-and-dig-through thing, where you know that eventually you'll see light at the end of the tunnel, but you can't see it yet.

So, teeth-gritting and digging it is for now.

The smart move would be to introduce automated weekly releases, but well…

I absolutely agree. Unfortunately I don't know how to do that, otherwise I'd done that a long time ago.

Here is another (long overdue) status update about what's going on with me ;)

Unfortunately I still can't give you much of good news. We're still struggling with the "big project" and its aftermath at my company, looks like it will take us at least until autumn to get things back to something resembling "normal". On top of that my Mac died last week and all attempts at resurrecting it failed :( Which means that I need to look for a new one (as if I hadn't already enough on my plate), and then rebuild my system.

Originally I wanted to get 0.4.9 out in summer at the latest, this is going to be a challenge now, with everything that's going on. Nevertheless I want to try to stick to that schedule. However, that means I won't be able to do anything besides/beyond that, so I won't be able to partake in anything else, like design discussions etc. (not that I had been very involved for months now :(). As much as that irks me, I have to cut corners. And I'll need your help with the release process, more than usual. I really don't want to have more than a year between two releases. 0.4.8 came out at the end of August last year, so we have roughly two months, which is only very little time.

So far for my little update. I hope to get around to open a 0.4.9 release thread before the end of the month. If all involved with dev work could start to wrap up and finalize their projects, that would help tremendously with getting the release out faster than usual. ;)

Cheers!

I'll be at a work thing on a mountain for most of this week, so may have limited or no internet access until Friday.

I will be busy with RL until end of september, I will be present on the forums but the things I'm currently developing will be on hold until then.
