Recent Windows Build

#1 Post by Sai »

I'm still experiencing issues with generating the largest galaxies the game allows (500 stars). I've let it run for roughly half an hour now without any result. (Using 3946, since the SVN is inaccessible).

Although actually, perhaps this revision is simply broken - I can't get it to generate a galaxy worth of 50 stars either.

Any chance you can make the latest revision available here through zip again? It'd be extremely helpful!

PS. I installed FreeOrion-0.3.15-Setup.exe first (clean install), then I extracted FreeOrion_Win32_VC90_3917.zip, and finally I extracted FreeOrion_Win32_3946.zip.

It's a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits system

If I didn't ask already, could you post freeoriond.log and freeorion.log and any AI log files from after trying to start a new game and getting a galaxy generation hang?

Could you try starting a game with 0 AIs?

I'll see if I can make something available...

It doesn't even crash, it just doesn't do anything except show the black screen with the two windows with errored titles. Creating with zero AIs doesn't seem to change anything.

Getting the same problem - reinstalling / running as admin did not help at all. The game just is stuck in a black window with in the bottom left two windows each with the title ERROR_something.

My configuration, and the exact error I'm receiving.

I installed FreeOrion on my E:\ local harddrive (it is a physically different HD from the other volumes)

Looks like you're running with mismatched content files and executables. Try deleting your config.xml, and making sure you're running with the latest SVN data files in the same directory tree as the executables.

Already tried killing every FreeOrion related directory and reinstalling everything all over again. The installation order is in my previous post and should be exactly as pd described it.

The basic installation (0.3.15) works 'fine' (it's just extremely slow with generating the universe). When I extract 'FreeOrion_Win32_3993.zip' over this installation the error is replicated. Taking the steps previously mentioned first does nothing to resolve this either :(

Edit: Will try using your tarball link (http://freeorion.svn.sourceforge.net/vi ... threv=3993), but this basically usually never is online.

Are you sure? Config.xml is not stored with the rest of the FreeOrion data and binaries...
Edit: Will try using your tarball link
The tarball method should be the same as using SVN, so it's probably not worth taking extra time to try if SVN has been tried already.

Unless it uses even other paths than C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\FreeOrion, then yes, I annihilated everything FreeOrion.

It's not clear from your previous posts that you've updated the default directory to the same SVN as the binaries you're using. You mentioned the tarball link often not working, but your previous posted list of steps didn't mention trying updating the default directory using SVN (the other option besides the tarball). If you haven't done either of those successfully, you don't have updated data files, and that would explain your selective ERROR strings in-game. The updated default needs to be within the directory where the binaries are located.

I guess you could also try starting the program, going into options, tweaking something like resolution, then hitting done and exiting, and checking what the resulting config.xml file says for <resource-dir>. It should be the default directory where you've got the updated files. If it's not, then it will presumably point you to where the older files are still lurking that it's using for some reason.

If you're sure you've updated the default directory, and are using the same / updated binaries, then I have no other ideas.

Perhaps I am missing a step then, I thought it was enough to do

FreeOrion-0.3.15-Setup.exe
FreeOrion_Win32_VC90_3917.zip
FreeOrion_Win32_3993.zip

The SVN download keeps crashing around 10mb.

If your downloading of the updated data files is aborting, and you're thus using outdated data files, it's not surprising that you're getting crashes...

If you didn't think updating the data files was necessary, then why were you trying to do it?

Regardless, you need data files from the same revision as the binaries you're using. This is why pd's post says to get them. If you can't get them, then that's the problem, and any amount of reinstalling the binaries isn't going to fix things.

Edit: I just downloaded the entire default directory tarball from sourceforge, so it should work to use that method, if SVN is failing for you. /Edit

I was under the impression he was referring to the files he included in that VC90 build, my bad, sorry. Now if only I had a way to download that tarball.... The speed just drops to 0 after a short amount of time, and it can't be resumed.

Edit: Trying a different SVN than subversion now also.

Doesn't work at all either. Just gets stuck downloading single files now, sigh. The SVN server just seems to go up and down intermittently.

Edit II: Finally got Subversion to suck in the trunk and copied the default directory as you instructed. Galaxy creation is still extremely slow, but it works again - time for some testing! Thanks!

It took me 4 attempts yesterday to download the entire tarball...it crashed at 7MB, 12MB, 25MB and 75MB then it finally worked =>.<=. Speed dropped to 0 and gave a error. I figured the server was overloaded or something. Least i wasn't the only one experiencing this...I thought i was...

Yeah it's not worth the effort really, get Subversion and use it to download the TRUNK instead. Also if I can spare the time I think I will just make an archive available containing the trunk, since Pd decided his mirror was best for the main package anyway. That way I make myself a little useful :)
