I have found FreeOrion and I like it so far, especially since it seems to have many ideas from Master of Orion.
My question: I am looking for a way to see the surface of a planet (like in Master of Orion) - how can I get there?

You can't. FreeOrion is a galaxy-spanning game. There is no gameplay need to fill the screen with information about a single planet. Everything you need to know about planets is visible on the system sidepanel.

Is this planned sometime in the future?

I like the idea of seeing my planet's surface, being able to see it "growing".
