is there an active player community? How do you find players for multiplayer games? I googled a bit and found nothing... Are you just arrangig 'private' games with your friends? Or are there almost no games (yet)?

FreeOrion isn't at a playable state yet (although some forum posters seem to disagree from time to time). As such, there aren't any established communities of players or ways to arrange a game. I've played a few internet games for testing, but usually just arranged that on IRC immediately before starting, and didn't so do with the primary intent of playing the game for fun.
PS. Many 'players' such as myself are waiting for the next release. We've played through everything FreeOrion has so far, and are waiting for the bugs we ran into to be dealt with You can expect a surge in activity when the new release comes by!
