You can also right-click on the desktop, select "Personalization" and disable the Aero Theme, and choose directly Windows Classic.

On my old laptop, by tweaking enough settings with the first solution, my W7 looks like this good old XP. ;)

no windows classic as a selection in personalize. (click on screen path, second described)
Going to have to learn about system administer access for the other path

All is now well, updated drivers, you called it correctly, no oppertunity now to find if another solution would have worked.
