My Hull Concepts... (Monsters and Drones Too)
I noticed that we only have 2 hull types. I was playing around a bit and put these together. If anyone wanted i could come out with some more designs.
As far as I know I can provide files in:
-DXF
-VRML
-Direct3D
Would any of these formats be useable?
If so, maybe we could use a bunch like these till we got more like we have now....it would at least give us distinguished hulls and keep you from going cross eyed at the Design page...
I also can add armaments if needed.

I'm not in a position to comment on whether or not these models will be usable, but I do recall that there should be no visible weaponry on the surface of the hull.Dart00_Tech wrote:I also can add armaments if needed.

Ya..im not really sure how to submit them so im just kinda doing them and tossing them here. I can provide the models on request. I was thinking maybe these could be used as temporary images/models untill pd finished them. As far as i know, im not equipping any weapons. Anything that "looks" like a weapon is probably a fuel tank, engine or intake.

I'll take them as temps, and happily.
I don't know what the technical requirements for 3D are, i'm not a 3D artist, so the following refers to the 2D side.

Ya I can do that. Whats the color bit depth? Let me finish all the hulls and assign my suggested hull names. You can mix and match and photoshop if you want from there.
The neat thing is these are REALLY 3D models and could still be used as temps when the 3D battle system gets worked if whoever is doing that will take a DXF,
VRML or Direct3D model.
Give me a few more days to finish all of them. There are A LOT of hulls in FO.

Before I make any more headway on this...I need to know if I got the hulls list right. These are all the hulls that need side views and "Epic" views correct? I also need to know if my classifications are correct cause each type will use a different texture I also need to know if my short description is correct.

However, at this point, having species specific ship hull models is not at all a priority - in fact, it would be sort of pointless if they're just placeholders anyway, so yeah, I think one model per hull you mentioned should be fine.Robotic Based:

Yes i could crank out a specific ship for each species, but that's a "unbelievable" amount of time and my imagination only goes so far....
Heres a example of a Side View and Epic View with the requested Specs. How does this look?
186 polygons, double anti-aliasing. Light from the left at 45*s. Its the "Compressed Energy Hull". See how it shines and radiates "Energy". Its designed to be small, light and FAST!

I think its looks pretty good. If this format is good ill finish the project and upload a .zip tomorrow.
I think ill use 2 different type of hull side views. The mid size ships and large ships will be the full length of window (like we have now) and the smaller designs will be a about 75% of full.

These should match the specs that you requested. The side views are interlaced while the small thumbnails are not. All graphics were rendered with triple anti-aliasing and are very smooth and clear.
Some of them you may need to adjust where the "slots" go to match the picture, but not by much i dont think.

They might be a bit simplistic compared to pd's designs, but i think it's great to have different hulls finally. This game could be more enjoyable if less things were left untouched until "perfect". For instance a lot of building designs (even if preliminary) have been made, and i'd like to see them in game. FreeOrion 1.0 might be years off, so having intermediate graphics is desirable i think.

If there are new ones, or ones i've missed feel free to start a thread (or add to the building thread) linking unused art to buildings without an icon.
