MOO3 had some interesting mechanics but they weren't presented well in the UI. The Endless games are the one case where I think they really got down how to display economic information. Similarly the economy tends to work better than GalCiv's based on how they break down the basics.

Anyway in the end everything has to be judged on execution. We're hoping that in the end once we're done with UI and systems polishing we'll be able to live up to what we're aiming for in terms of execution.
