FreeCraft Update

Well, on the old forums I posted about how Blizzard had complained about freecraft and the freecraft crew decided to shut down rather than face legal difficulties.

They have split the game data from the engine, and released it under the name Stratagus - so it's not over, just a new focus.

I've never even sniffed the freecraft/stratagus code--no idea how messy it is.

That said, thier new focus on making a generic rts engine makes me wonder how much we might salavage from this project when making the FO combat engine.

I never looked at FreeCraft either, but they must have made some pretty significant progress if Blizzard took notice. Wouldn't it be nice if FreeOrion ended up being good enough for Infogrames to take notice?

That would be very cool, but I don't think they'll have much - the only thing they'll have on us is our name, the word Orion. Apart from that, it's a new game :)

As for freecraft, that was a direct clone of WC2

hrm,

It would be cool if Atari or Firaxis (whoever owns the rights) decided to make a commerical distribution (like Red Hat) instead of sending out the nastygrams.

anyway, that's all cart before the horse.

Then we should rename FreeOrion in LIMOOSSU, which stand for "LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us" ;)

Sort of like the 'G' in GNU

Actually if you want to get technical, the 'L' stands for:

LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us LIMOOSSU Is Master Of Orion, So Sue Us........STACK OVERFLOW

seeing that now the combat engine is beginning to shape, i suppose tha stratagus is not longer an option?

Stratagus sounds like an odd option. FO isn't Real-time strategy.

FreeOrion isn't in (realistic) danger of being sued. Microprose/Quicksilver doesn't own the word "Orion." As has been mentioned previously, FO has a distinct name and will have distinct gameplay. On the other had, FreeCraft was pretty much a rip off of WarCraft.

Though i certainly wouldn't be dissapointed if FO changed it's name. FreeOrion is bland and sounds like a much less original game that it's actually planned to be.
