With nothing to do on planets, research is the only non-military decision you ever make. Otherwise: build the best ships you can. Fight. Which is cool and all, but I'm not sure I need to play it a lot of times to get everything I'm going to get. I think I need to have more long-term choices than jus...

One homeworld, many factions

I realise this is a bit out of left field, but I think this could work very well: Imagine if scientists on Earth developed a cheap and effective stardrive tomorrow. (See drek's post for an example: http://www.freeorion.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=817). I realise it doesn't *have* to be done, but such a staggeringly unlikely set-up in so many ...

Other stufff, in a separate post becuase it's got nothing to do with the other thing: 1. What kind of scale are you looking at? I was thinking that, if combat was to be on, say, a system-wide scale, then perhaps the combat map could actually be used in the strategy part of the game - place minefield...

Motherships? Something completely different

The problem with ship "units" - as in MOO3 - is that what you have is essentially one big ship. It's got yay many guns and can take yay much damage, but it's basically a ship you build on the fly out of other, little ships. Similarly if you have clouds of ShipA, backed by clouds of ShipB, ...
