Re: Baby Space Monsters!

Robbie, I don't mean to be rude, but I think you should take a look a some of the earlier posts on this thread, because you seem to be dragging us back away from some of the ideas we almost agree on. For instance: space monsters as strategic resource, players controlling the frequency of space monst...

Re: SCons doesn't like op.environ on windows system.

OK, so I downloaded ogre sdk, but that didn't help, so I went ahead and downloaded the freeorion sdk from sourceforge today. After getting that all updated and configuring it for python 2.6, I didn't get the ogre error :D . Instead I got a new error :( main() caught exception(GG::Font::BadFile): Fac...

Re: SCons doesn't like op.environ on windows system.

Well, I said I had it sorted, but the problem came back after a reboot. Thanks for the tip Sajaki. My environment vars weren't set either. Maybe we should add a line to the readme file about setting those? I will look into having scons make them automatically. Anyway, not a big deal, but after I got...

Re: Governments- a Comprehensive list and discriptions

Yeah, I like your names better, but hopefully you see what I mean about putting all the options as different facets of a single trichotomy. It makes the system intuitive, meaningful (gameplay-wise), and simple to program (both now and in the future). That is what we need to be striving for. PS: By i...

Re: Governments- a Comprehensive list and discriptions

It seems as if most of the choices we could have for government fall as a choice between constrictive and accomodating (to borrow Krikkitone terminology). maybe we could use this to organize the choices. That would make it easy for empires to have a preference for one "type" of government ...

Re: Content: High-Level Strategic Options

It seems like we could consolidate much of the above discussion into a trichotomy: Diplomats would form treaties and try to work together with other races. They would gain benefits to research, and trade from all of the interaction. This strategy would have the additional benefit of being able to ge...

Re: Baby Space Monsters!

I might be open to a less precise way of controlling space monsters in combat, provided the element of randomness isn't too great... For example, they might automatically retreat after taking too much damage, or divide their firepower between the defined target and whatever ships are annoying it. B...

Re: Baby Space Monsters!

My second concern is the introduction of complex rules for the control of space monsters. Do we expect the player to know this type of space monster will only defend blue stars or attack if there's a gas giant in the system? ... I'm more than happy to accept/contribute to designing unique ways of c...

Re: SCons doesn't like op.environ on windows system.

Hmm, this is a little wierd. I thought I had MSVC installed already, but it seems I didn't. After installing 2008 version, I got everything to work up until ".\freeorion\scons install" which had some trouble loading python25.dll could this have something to do with the fact that I uninstal...

Re: Governments- a Comprehensive list and discriptions

P.S. I for one would much prefer if we left religion out of the game completely. No good can come of including it, as I have never been satisfied with any depiction that I have ever seen in any video game. Fortunately no one gets offended when fictional religions get portrayed badly, and aliens arn...

Really nice race: interesting biology, believable culture that evolved naturally from their surroundings. Flying Monkey's dosn't do it justice, especially with prehensile noses. Thanks  Tiny mistake here: Size can vary widely from 1-2m tall, with no difference between the two sexes. A shor...

Actually, I was thinking they would be too heavy to fly in normal gravity and without the thick atmosphere of their home planet.

Re: Governments- a Comprehensive list and discriptions

O.K. We really need to kill the off topic argument here. If the individuals currently engaged in the discussion about the comparative merits of theocracy wish to carry on their discussion, they are welcome to do so in the rant and rave section. I will gladly join them and throw in my two cents. As t...

but some cataclysm [experimenters?] changed the world. It would have to be slowly, so that their physiology adapted to live on this new world, but they didn't necessarily like the new way the world worked. How about there solar system traveled into a bad part of space and they had constant meteor i...

Re: SCons doesn't like op.environ on windows system.

Try replacing os.environ['LIB'] with os.environ.get('LIB') on line 11 in the SConstruct file. After making a couple of those changes, I got scons to run, but it didn't actually compile the program :? There was no executable file in the freeorion directory. here is the config.log file D:\FreeOrion_S...
