Thanks for the awesome replies, everyone. I'll give the larger map a shot and see how it works out

Good large map size?
I've been reading the comments on the forums for a while, and I've noticed that the devs had mentioned, at least off-handedly, that galaxies containing up to 500 stars are possible, although not necessarily recommended because of potential game stability issues. This naturally leads me to the questi...

Re: My new FreeOrion LP on youtube
I took a break from gaming for a bit to deal with real-world things, but it looks like we're going to be snowed in over in my neck of the woods, so outside of work, I will have time to play.

Re: Getting info from save game
What might be helpful is have the meta-game information saved in each save file (I can't imagine the data being more than a couple hundred bytes so it shouldn't waste much space even if the same exact data was stored in each individual file). If that could happen, then a "recreate galaxy" ...

Re: My new FreeOrion LP on youtube
1. I notice that you don't use the category filters on the research screen - is this because their existence/function is not obvious enough, or because it's not clear enough which category to look under to find techs that satisfy a particular need? 2. Systems with native species will have their nam...

Re: Getting info from save game
Number of systems isn't stored in the save as a separate number, but you could count them manually, or attach a debugger and have a look at the size of a container with just systems in it. I thought about that (I was attempting to do that when I would run "strings S0001.sav" on it), but c...

Getting info from save game
I have a save file containing a galaxy that I would like to recreate from scratch with a more aggressive AI setting, but I can't for the life of me remember what my new game parameters were (specifically, the number of systems). Of course, in the time since I created that game, I've generated other ...

My new FreeOrion LP on youtube
I was a fan of the old MOO series, and recently started playing FreeOrion. Needless to say, I liked what I saw and decided to do a few LP videos on youtube. The first one is uploaded, an here's the link to it.

Re: v0.3.16 (SVN 4046) Python error with OSX
Instead of deleting the 2.5 folder, I think I'll try editing the symbolic links that point it to the 2.5 directory and instead point to the directory structure where I have 2.6. Specifically, in the /Applications/FreeOrion.app/Contents/Frameworks/Python.framework there are three symbolic links: Hea...
