Re: Tech Tree Discussion: FO vs. MoO2

Lasewrs could do fixed damage at every range and another type of weapon would have reduced effect over range. This kind of thing would make the different kind of weapons much more interesting. Right, and I think one interesting point here is that laser, the level 1 weapon, should also have a pro. I...

Re: Exotic Species & Tech Descriptions

I don't remember what Androids were like in MoO, or if you detailed those ideas. MoO2 had android farmers, workers and scientists. They would need to be built with production, and never breed themselves. Once built, they could not be reassigned (i.e., an Android farmer could not be changed into an ...

Re: Tech Tree Discussion: FO vs. MoO2

Refinement for weapons is a fine concept, and can make an earlier weapon relevant for mid- and late-game. I think what that necessarily means is that each weapon type needs to be qualitatively different from one another. If a Lv 5 graviton beam has all features of Lv 1 laser beam, there will be no r...

Re: Exotic Species & Tech Descriptions

But what would happen if Empire X proceeded to research a few Growth techs, and then performed racial cleansing on the non-lithovores? It wouldn't make sense to keep the Growth techs bonus. You might say that it would "unresearch" all of them, but what if Empire X conquered more organic s...

Re: Exotic Species & Tech Descriptions

Don't forget unlike MoO, in FO species does not equal empire. So just because you started the game with a (non-corporeal, lithovoric, digital mind, etc.) species -- assuming we have such -- doesn't mean that your empire won't include "ordinary" species doing the research. If certain techs...

Re: Exotic Species & Tech Descriptions

I think a good system will have incorporated a blend of multiple solutions to this problem. 1. The "main" tech tree will be developed with a human race in mind. A number of humanoid, organic aliens can utilize this tree, maybe with just tweaks in explanatory text of the tech. E.g., if an i...

Re: Tech Tree Discussion: FO vs. MoO2

I loved both MoO2 and Civ IV, and agree with Bigjoe5 that the "mutual exclusivity" feature of MoO2 tech tree/column made the game much more interesting. It differentiated each civ much more than it would with a Civ IV style tech tree. In Civ IV, because of tech trading, everyone on the sam...

Re: v0.4 - What's Missing?

I know the ground combat is for 0.6, but what about "boarding" feature of the space combat? Any discussion on that?

Re: Habitability and Planet Quality (with pictures)

I'm not trying to add anything radically new to the concept of "habitability". I am trying to make it a little more comprehensive and complete. Homeworlds have always been better than the ordinary planet of the same EP, and Gaians have always been better than Homeworlds. Until the reworki...

Re: Terrain worlds

One note... as for playing octopods/dolphins. The idea is that if you took the Dolphins/octopi on earth today and genetically modified them with sufficient intelligence and tool using capacity to become a space faring species, they would still prefer Terran to Ocean worlds.. the disadvantage with O...

Re: Terrain worlds

That works. But my real point was that Terran worlds are the odd one out among other worlds. Every world is an environment type, except Terran that is "like Earth". The actual Terran/Ocean thing was that Earth was mostly ocean so why isn't actaully called an Ocean world (see several repli...

Re: Terrain worlds

Say the atmosphere of the Ocean world is not oxygen-based or non-existent. As long as all ocean water consists of H²0 and not some other liquid, photosynthesis ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosynthesis ) will always make the atmosphere have (enough) oxygen, probably way too much oxygen on a pur...

Re: Habitability and Planet Quality (with pictures)

Eleazar - it seems to me that you are introducing new concept to the concept of "habitability". The way I understand it, EPs are objective and habitabilities are specific to each race. Especially when the player has mutliple species in the empire, it would be convenient to be told how frie...

Re: Terrain worlds

Agree 100% with Krikkitone. The 9 EP types are the most meaningful when understood in connection with the species living in them. On the other hand, I think Tortanik's ire came from somewhat different direction. Let me see if I can create a good example to carry the point - if the humans and the sap...

Re: Comments on v. 0.3.9

I also installed 0.3.9 and .net framework. I can proceed to the window that pops up when I click "Single Player" -- the window that sets the number of stars, etc. When I click "ok" to start the game, it becomes unresponsive for 30+ seconds, and then shows an error message "T...
