Uhm... so then how was this running fine in Win98, five years ago...?

I don't recall the screen saver in question, so not entirely certain.

Probably it wasn't 3d accelerated. The desktop could be a static image in memory; a snapshot of the desktop when the screensaver started. (unlike our galaxy map, which changes -and- is generated on the video card) The glass ball distorts a rectangle of the static image, blits the static image and the small glass ball distortioned rectangle directly to video memory. (but not to texture memory on the video card.)

Hi all, I'm new to this group, but thought I'd take a crack at some stars for v0.3. They're hiding out at:

Please take a look if you're curious. Cheers!

Hi and welcome.
Breadman is currently working on new stars for 0.3 (btw, how are you doing with them?) and I'm working with sidepanel and new UI theme. I just have to get my move arranged, still much unpacking and organising to do, on next week you'll have new sketches to see, I promise :)

Wait a little while until we will have some clearance with technologies and we will certainly find you something to work with. Also if you might like to take a peek on discussion about production on research UI's :)

Eh, been really busy with work lately. Just had a deadline friday so maybe things will ease up a little this week. Still never heard a definite though: are hotspots and halos going to be separate files (for scaling seperatley)? Maybe I'll just do 2 versions, shouldn't be hard to change if its needed.

BUMP!

It'd be nice if someone, BreadMan or otherwise, could do some work on stars for v0.3. In particular, there's one now that needs some fixing of its alpha values:

A complete overhaul would be nicer though...

Can we perhaps expand the number of star pictures, I realy like variety, mixing some of the older star versions done Breadman with the current stars alogn with any newly made ones would give us quite a lot. Some expantion of the code would be needed ofcorse. Idealy we would have any number of star pictures in the game so long as their a seperate folder for each color the game counts the pics in it and uses them all, it would then be easy to add more without changing the code.

You know while we're on the subject, we talked a while back about doing some sort of star animations. I actually did some tests back then, you can see the results here:

How its done:

Think I showed it to Zach at one point, not sure if he ever did anything with it. Probably has enough to do already :P

Generally they look good, but I have a complaint:

The arrowed stars are all supposed to be orange, but don't look orange enough, IMO. Some look pink (and thus red) and others look sort of... brownish and indistinct... or even greenish. The one on the left side half way up without an arrow is also orange, and this can be clearly determined by its colour, which is better.

(I also prefer a smaller / more localized central bright spot, as in the visibly orange one, but I suspect that's just me...)

I'm pretty sure it already does this...

Their all kept in the art/stars folder.

I agree the stars with the smaller centre look better, next batch more will be like that.
