Hi

First off, this is beautifull. I spent about 10 hours last night to play and research and build and colonize... nice :)

But a thing is, this game REALLY is feeding on the hard drive. When i ended my unplanned gaming session early this morning to go to work, i got the Windows-message about low disk space on c:\ - the explanation was found quickly. Freeorion had made several GB of autosaves, AI_x.log, freeorion.log and freeoriond.log... Of course, the logfiles got deleted after creating a new game, but those 2k autosaves... um... not.

So, my suggestion:
- how about an option to save only so many autosaves, or to hardcode that instead of an option?
- are logfiles limited in size in any way? At least i can't imagine to upload a logfile of several hundred mb if something crashed... :P

That's just my cents :)

oh, im on an XP mashine, in case thats of interest.

You can disable autosaves in the options screen, Autosave tab. You can also set how frequently, in turns, to autosave. If disabled, you can still manually save when desired.

I'm not inclined to do any more than that now, because autosaves are very useful for debugging purposes.

While I'm glad you've enjoyed FreeOrion for 10 hours, it is still under heavy development, and is not meant to be a polished playable game. So for now, testing purposes outweigh a disk-space issue such as this.

To resolve the issue, the first thing to do would be to switch saves to store data as binary instead of text, which would drastically reduce the size of save file. For now, being able to read them in a text editor is more important, though.

As for the log files, they're also intentionally quite verbose at the moment. Several things in them could be removed, such as full listings of all the objects in the universe several times per turn, but for now they're useful for debugging purposes. Limit the size of the log file would require deciding what to delete from it, and figuring out a good way to delete some parts and not others, which is likely to create problems and be a hassle. What you could do is make the log file, of size zero after you delete its contents, read-only, preventing any logging and hopefully not causing any problems in the process.

Thanks, works greatly. :D

Anyway, i guess, for now its better to delete the logs manually after playing, in case... whatever happens...

(going to find a first minidump... maybe... after x hours of further play)

Keep in mind that the log files are overwritten each time the game is run.
