 Post subject: Ver. 0.4 hangs during single player modes (Mac)

After I choose Quick Play from the main menu or go past the galaxy setup screen, the screen goes black with only two pop up boxes in the lower left hand corner. The lower one reads "Creating AI clients" and nothing more (image below). The strange thing is, when I chose multiplayer to see if the same thing would happen, I got it to run, so I don't think it's a graphics or driver issue. I'm running SVN 4635 on a Macbook with OSX 10.7.4 installed and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB. Would anyone happen to know how I can get the game to work in single player, or should I wait for a build that works specifically for Lion?

See what happens if you set up a game with zero AI empires. If that runs fine you probably need to update python.

I run Lion fine , but don't remember if i switched before 4.0

If eleazar's suggestion doesn't work, locate freeorion.log, freeoriond.log, and any AI_#.log files in Username/Library/Application Support/FreeOrion/ and zip and attach them to a reply.

Tried setting the number of AI players to zero, same thing happened. Here's the logs you asked for.

The last line of the server log shows you started a game with a universe with 20 stars, suggesting it crashed during universe generation. This is also not the default universe configuration. What configuration (shape, # stars, the various other options about starlanes or planets or monsters) did you use?

You might try deleting your config.xml and trying again, as usually the defaults work, and the issue might be specific to a particular universe configuration (similar to this).

If using a different galaxy configuration helps, you might try one of the newer test releases, which had the linked but fixed...

I had 20 systems, cluster galaxy, mature age, and everything else medium with 1 AI player when I tried. I also tested another one to see if worked or not.

43 systems, spiral, 4-arm, ancient, high starlane freq., medium planet density, low specials freq., high monster freq., and medium native freq. with 3 AI players. Didn't work either. I'll try one of the newer test builds to see if there's any change and report back.

Tried test builds 5013 and 4986, no change. Deleted the config.xml file and tried all three again and nothing happened either. Multiplayer still works on all three.

Does freeoriond.log look the same with the latest test release and trying to start a game with no AIs, and galaxy setup of 3-arm spiral with 10 stars? That is, does it end after "Creating universe with 10 stars and 1 players"?

Nah, but there was a line in it that said "failed to lower priority for AI process". Don't know if that's anything relevant, but that sounds like something that could be gumming it up.

Eleazar, if it's not too much trouble, can you try to run 0.4 on your system? Just to be sure if 0.4 works on Lion. All my Macs still run 10.6, so I can't do that myself...

Hm, that error message belongs to a mechanism I only recently implemented. The fact that older builds which don't have this feature implemented also fail and that it shouldn't interfere with universe generation (during which the server apparently crashes) anyway however makes it highly unlikely that this has anything to do with the problem at hand (of course, you never know... but I'll try other things first).

That said, it's still strange that this error message appears... can you attach the log files (freeorion.log, freeoriond.log and all AI_XX.log) after trying the setup Geoff suggested? I'm referring to this one:

It's very unlikely, but just to make sure: You aren't using any kind of antivirus software on your system, are you? If you do, can you try again with the antivirus disabled?

Do you have the build in firewall enabled? If yes, can you try again with the firewall disabled?

So freeoriond.log looks very different with no AIs, 3-spiral, and 10 stars? If so, then yes: attach the file to a post, as that suggests a very different problem is happening.

I don't use any anti virus software and I've tried messing with the firewalls too, but I didn't get anything out of it. Here's the batch of logs from 5013; put the ogre file in there in case there's something rattling around in there.
