I instantly think this is because of OpenGL or something. Also, by don't start, I mean the command console shows up and then disappears.

You should mention the operating system and version (presumably a version of Windows?) when reporting a crash.

If it is Windows, try running from the command line (cmd.exe) and seeing if anything is output.

Similarly, what version of FreeOrion are you trying to run?

Is there also a freeorion.log produced? If so, what's in it?

Since it's not being reported in ogre.log, can you find out what version of OpenGL your system supports? You might be able to get a better result by updating your video drivers.

Does running "freeorion -h" output a bunch of text to the command line when run from the cmd.exe console?

Ok, my Windows version and operating system:
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (5.2, Build 3790)

I am running FreeOrion 0.4 and I do not understand what you mean by "try running from the command line". Where can I find freeorion.log? How can I find out what OpenGL my system supports?

And yes, "freeorion -h" outputs a bunch of text in cmd.exe.

cmd.exe is "the console" or "the command line", and you've apparently already done this. Try running "freeorion.exe" without "-h" and see if anything is output to that console window that might indicate what the problem is.

Look in your video driver settings, or search online for information about your video card or adapter, which might indicate what version of OpenGL is supported. If you could get FreeOrion to start, it would also tell you in the log files.

Since the logs end after it tries to start up the OpenGL system, and you're running Wincows XP, I'm inclined to guess you've got a quite old computer or a very low-power netbook type machine that has very limited OpenGL support, and may not be able to run recent versions of FreeOrion.

I suggest trying updating your video drivers, though; it's been known to get things working in some cases.
