Can't Save/ Load or Use Preferences

Hello,

I'm using the latest Version of Free Orion but i can't save or load a game. Without any Message FO quiets and i get back to desktop.

Also i can't use the preferencesbutton on the menu. Same Problem if i try to save or load...

Sorry for my bad english - i come from Germany and it is long time ago i had english as language in school :lol:

My System:

ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series (Latest Drivers installed)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @2.5 GHz
Ram 8 GB
Win 7 Home Premium 64 Bit Service Pack 1

I hope somebody can help me - i'm a Fan of MoO and FreeOrion is defintly a cool clone

How far do you get into the game when it quits?

Can you play if you set "Number of Ai Players" to 0?

Since you're German, I'm guessing this is this bug. Do you have any non-Latin characters in your Windows user name? If so, you might need to play FreeOrion from a login with only Latin characters, as there is a problem with path handling when tends to cause crashes when trying to access the user directory, such as occurs when saving games or trying to change options.

hmmm... it is so that i have in German "Umlaute" in my User Directory. I mean an ö instead of oe...

damn... so i have to make another Useraccount at my Windows?

I will try this and make a reply after that.

i can play at every time... only saving, loading or preferences are not functionally...

it was my Username...

i will say it with the words of Homer Simpson "DOH" :lol:

had the same problem but with the letter "í"
simple solutioun.
I oppened the file
config.xml
in Context

and I changed the text of this line
<save-dir>F:\Documents and Settings\Daniel\Data aplikací\FreeOrion\save</save-dir>
into
<save-dir>J:\hry\FreeOrion\save</save-dir>

after i just simply copyed the whole save directory into
J:\hry\FreeOrion
and now i can acces the option, save, load ...
