Hello,

I'm currently developing a browser game called Project Mankind (you'll need Firefox 3.5 to view ;)) and I'd love to use some of your great graphics in my game.

I already found that you use the Attribution-Share Alike 3.0-License so I should be permittet to use them as log as you get credit and I distribute the images under the same license.

My question now is, if the link "Credits & License" I inserted in the bottom right corner and the text of the window opened when clicked upon works for you or if you want it bigger and/or more detailed ;)

I don't have Firefox 3.5 installed and so can't check it out. Could you please provide screenshots of the content you've used?

I haven't used any content yet.

I would like to use the planets, their atmospheres and the stars background images.

The "Credits & License"-window should work with any current browser.

Looks good to me. You should however mention the exact name of the license. Have you seen our junkyard? You might find something useful in there too.

The text was copied from the CC-site but I added the licence's name.

Just found some cool nebula-images ;)

Thanks

Lol. That's me

Which reminds me of a question I've been asked a few times earlier:

Is it okay if people use my nebula images in that thread we have, even if intend to make money off it, or are those Nebulae now FO's property? I submitted them for this project to use and this is a free open source project, and I just want to clarify how this works.

Hopefully this answers your question.

1. You have released the artwork for FreeOrion under the CC-by-SA license, which will hold until your own copyright expires (when it will become public domain). Since it is a free license other people outside FO may use the artwork as well, under the restrictions of the given license.
2. As it is your creation (and you have not waived any parts of the “economical half” of copyright) you may “release” it again and again and again, in any or no license of your choice.

(Other people may use the artwork for commercial purposes as well, but only you may modify the image and “change” the license.)

I love your art by the way!

In an attempt to protect artists I tried to make a point about when the license applies in the Guidelines(needs some more work apparently) . I don't think it's necessary to put all work that is created here under the license in question. Basically the license only needs to apply to everything, that ends up in the game(=is distributed with it).

According to the license, every kind of usage(including commercial) is allowed, under the following conditions:
Quote:
Attribution — You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).

Share Alike — If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same, similar or a compatible license.

I've always been unsure about how to handle the attribution part. I could provide real names for most, if not all work that has been done...

Well when people contribute nobody really knows what will actually end up in the game-- or do you mean that we don't need to worry about the license of stuff that isn't intended for the game, like screenshots that we've drawn over to illustrate some point?

That's a good point. I was thinking that content which is posted in the forums, shouldn't have to generally fall under the license in question. Instead people posting the work should be willing to release it using this license in case it is commited. I'm not sure about that anymore, though. If they are willing to do this, why not just go ahead and use the license.

Conceptart, beauty renders, work in progress images and mockups will definitely not be part of the game. So there's no reason to apply the license to those, unless people want it.
